“Most girls from poor background do not believe in love. They just want to escape their  conditions” – Nigerian father tells son

A Nigerian father has said he advised his son not to date any girl who hails from a poor background, aso Naija reports.

In a tweet shared on his handle, the man stated that from his own dating experience, he has come to understand that most of them don’t believe in love.

He wrote in his tweet,

“I told my son yesterday to avoid dating a girl from a poor background. In my dating experience, most of them don’t believe in love, they just want to escape their unfortunate conditions. More so, they’re the saviors their families are banking on to lift them out of poverty.

They don’t appreciate little things; they believe you can do more.”

ASUU Abuja Zone: 46 Members Lost due to Economic Hardship

    Published

    on

    KEY NOTES

    • ASUU Abuja Zone has experienced the tragic loss of 46 members.

    • The losses can be attributed to economic hardship and poor remuneration
    • Strenuous working conditions, psychological stress, and diseases related to poor working conditions have also contributed to the members’ demise.
    • The recent passing of Professor Johnson Oyero highlights the inability to afford quality medical care.
    • The affected academics were affiliated with institutions such as the University of Abuja, Federal University of Technology Minna, and others.
    •  Nigerian academics leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad has exacerbated the strain on those who remain.
    • Improved support and recognition for academics in the Abuja Zone are urgently needed.

According to Salihu Muhammed Lawal, the Abuja Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the union has experienced a tragic loss of 46 members in the Abuja zone, Aso Naija Reports.

These losses are attributed to the current economic hardships in the country and the inadequate compensation provided to academics and universities in the zone.

During a press briefing held on Monday, February 19, 2024, in Abuja, Lawal revealed that the union members succumbed to various challenges, including strenuous working conditions, psychological and emotional stress, and illnesses resulting from poor working environments.

Lawal emphasized the severity of the situation by mentioning the recent passing of Professor Johnson Oyero, a distinguished expert in Fisheries at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, who was unable to access quality medical care due to financial constraints.

The 46 academics who have tragically passed away were affiliated with institutions such as the University of Abuja, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State University, and Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State.

Lawal further highlighted a disconcerting trend that has emerged in the past decade, with many Nigerian academics opting to leave the country in pursuit of better opportunities abroad.

This brain drain phenomenon has placed a heavier workload on the remaining academics who possess a dwindling sense of patriotism due to inadequate remuneration and unfavorable working conditions.

Overall, these distressing circumstances have contributed to the loss of numerous valuable members of ASUU and have created a pressing need for improved support and recognition for academics and universities in the Abuja zone.

Nigerians With Fake Certificates From Foreign Countries To Be Arrested— Minister of Education

Security agents will go after Nigerians with fake certificates from foreign countries already using them to secure opportunities in the country, Education Minister Tahir Mamman has said, Aso Naija Reports.

Mamman, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, described such individuals as criminals and not victims. “I have no sympathy for such people. Instead, they are part of the criminal chain that should be arrested,” the minister said sternly.

“If along the line, we can trace that there are people already in the system. For instance, if a particular institution or operator has been operating, say in the last 10 years, we will check if we can get records of Nigerians who attended that institution.

Once we do that, they are criminals and you know there is no timeframe to criminality. We will trace them. As long as we can lay our hands on their institutions and they are right here with us, certainly, the security agencies will go after them because they are criminals,” Mamman said when asked what would be done to Nigerians with fake foreign certificates already within the system.

Additionally, the minister also said the Federal Government would suspend degree certificates from more countries like Uganda, Kenya and the Niger Republic.

“We are not going to stop at just Benin and Togo. We are going to extend the dragnet to countries like Uganda, Kenya, even Niger here where such institutions have been set up.”

It would be recalled that an undercover journalist had detailed how he acquired a degree from a university in Benin Republic under two months and in fact, deployed for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The Federal Government had suspended immediately suspended accreditation of certificates from the two francophone West African nations and launched a probe which the minister said should submit its report in three months.

Nigerian Students in Panic as Federal Government Bans 18 Foreign Universities Operating in Nigeria over Fake Degrees

Nigerian students are growing increasingly anxious as the Nigerian government imposes a ban on 18 foreign universities operating within the country due to concerns of fraudulent degrees, Aso Naija Reports.

The ban, which affects universities from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ghana, was announced by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in a statement published on its website. The NUC clarified that these universities, labeled as “degree mills,” lacked the necessary licenses from the Federal Government and have consequently been shut down.

To ensure compliance with the Education (National Minimum Standards, etc.) Act of the Federation of Nigeria from 2004, the NUC issued a warning to the general public, particularly parents and prospective undergraduate students, urging them to avoid enrolling in these unlicensed institutions.

The following is a list of the foreign universities banned by the NUC, as reported on their website:

    1. University of Applied Sciences and Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, and its affiliated campuses in Nigeria.
    2. Volta University College, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana, and its affiliated campuses in Nigeria.
    3. The International University, Missouri, USA, with study centers in Kano and Lagos, as well as any of its campuses in Nigeria.
    4. Columbus University, operating in the United Kingdom, with any presence in Nigeria.
    5. Tiu International University, operating in the United Kingdom, with any presence in Nigeria.

This ban has left Nigerian students concerned about the legitimacy of their degrees and has raised awareness about the importance of verifying the accreditation of educational institutions before enrollment.
