Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to Face Fresh Charges as EFCC Prepares for Arraignment

Emefiele accused of approving the printing of N684.5m notes with N18.9bn and unlawfully withdrawing N124.8bn, adding to existing charges against him.

Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is facing further legal troubles as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prepares to arraign him on a fresh charge, Aso Naija Reports.

The EFCC alleges that Emefiele authorized the printing of N684.5 million notes amounting to N18.96 billion.

In the new four-count charge against him, the EFCC accuses Godwin Emefiele of disregarding the law and intentionally causing harm to the public during the implementation of the naira swap policy under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Additionally, the anti-graft agency claims that Emefiele unlawfully approved the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.

According to information obtained by Channels Television, the former CBN governor is scheduled to be arraigned on these charges before Justice Maryann Anenih of the FCT High Court in Abuja on April 30.

This will mark the third set of charges brought against Emefiele.

On November 17, 2023, he was arraigned before Justice Hamza Muazu on a six-count charge of procurement fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Emefiele has also been accused of misusing his position by approving a contract for the acquisition of 43 vehicles totaling N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.

On April 8, 2024, the EFCC further arraigned the former banker and Henry Omoile before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on charges of an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud.

Emefiele has also pleaded not guilty to this charge.
