Bobrisky Appeals Conviction, Seeks Fine Instead of Imprisonment

Popular crossdresser challenges six-month imprisonment sentence in appeal, arguing for imposition of fines on naira abuse charges.

Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, has lodged an appeal against his conviction by a Federal High Court in Lagos, Aso Naija Reports.

In the notice of appeal, Bobrisky has requested the Court of Appeal to overturn the six-month maximum imprisonment sentence imposed on him and instead impose a fine of N50,000 for each count against him.

On April 12, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for engaging in naira abuse.

In the appeal filed by his lawyer, Bobrisky argues that the trial judge made legal and factual errors by imposing the maximum sentence of six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

According to Bobrisky, this contradicts the provisions of Section 416(2) d of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015 (“ADCJA”), which stipulates mandatory guidelines for the trial court regarding sentencing for first-time offenders like Bobrisky.

Subsequently , the appeal seeks to have the six-month maximum imprisonment sentence set aside and replaced with a fine of N50,000 for each count against Bobrisky.

It’s worth noting that on April 4, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed six counts of money laundering and naira abuse against Bobrisky.

On April 5, Bobrisky was arraigned in court on a six-count charge, which included allegations of naira abuse and money laundering.

However , the court dismissed the money laundering charges, but Bobrisky was convicted after pleading guilty to four counts of naira abuse brought against him by the EFCC.
