The sentence was handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos for the offense of abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency, the naira.
Justice Awogboro emphasized that the judgment is intended to serve as a deterrent to others who engage in the unlawful treatment of the national currency.
Bobrisky was convicted last week on April 5, 2024, after being arrested and arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for tampering with 490,000 naira by spraying the bills.
The court had previously scheduled the sentencing hearing after Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the four-count charge brought against him by the EFCC.
This ruling underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the national currency and cracking down on financial crimes.
