These telecom giants are urging the federal government to engage in constructive discussions within the industry on Tariffs.
The telecommunications providers argue that the current price control mechanism does not align with the economic realities of the sector.
Therefore, they are seeking the government’s intervention to address the challenges associated with pricing.
In a joint statement issued by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) on Thursday, the four telecom companies expressed concern that they are the only ones that have not adjusted their prices.
They believe this situation not only threatens the sustainability of the industry but also undermines investor confidence.
ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and ATCON President, Mr. Tony Emoekpere, emphasized that there has been no general upward revision of the service pricing framework for the past 11 years.
They attributed this lack of increment to regulatory limitations, despite the prevailing economic challenges.
The statement highlighted the need for a pricing framework that reflects economic realities and ensures the industry’s sustainability and operators’ financial viability.
The telecommunications sector, despite facing adverse economic conditions, remains the sole industry that has not revised its general service pricing framework upward in over a decade.
The industry stakeholders urge the government to engage in a constructive dialogue to address pricing challenges and establish a framework that strikes a balance between consumers’ affordability and operators’ financial viability.
