This measure was enacted through a law approved by the state House of Assembly on Thursday, February 1, with the aim of regulating burial and funeral practices within the state.
According to the law, mortuary attendants are required to inform the Ministry of Health whenever a corpse remains in their care for more than one month from the date of deposit.
However, it should be noted that any individual found to be in violation of these regulations may be subject to a fine of N100,000 or face a six-month prison sentence, or both.
Additionally, the law mandates that all burial and funeral ceremonies for local deceased individuals in the state must be registered with the town union of the deceased. It is important to obtain permission from the relevant Local Government Authority in order to carry out such ceremonies.
