Family of Sylvester Oromoni, Alleged Victim of Bullying and Torture, Announces Burial Date

The family of Sylvester Oromoni Jr., a 12-year-old pupil of Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos State, has disclosed the date for their son’s burial, Aso Naija Reports.

Sylvester passed away on November 30, 2021, following alleged torture inflicted by senior students at the college who purportedly intended to initiate him into a cult group.

In a statement obtained on Monday, the family expressed their profound sorrow and announced that they would bid farewell to Sylvester on Saturday, January 27, 2024. The burial ceremony will take place at Ogbe-Ijaw Warri Kingdom in Delta State.

The tragic death of Sylvester Oromoni Jr., born on December 4, 2009, was shrouded in controversy. He fell victim to a distressing assault by fellow students, succumbing to his injuries on November 30, 2021.

Sylvester Oromoni was known for his exceptional intellect, maturity, initiative, and sense of humor, which endeared him to those who knew him.

His passion for knowledge, particularly in computer science, programming, electrical science, and football, set him apart.

The absence of Sylvester has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family and those who held him dear. His legacy will endure through cherished memories of the profound impact he made on others.

During their ongoing period of mourning, the family urges everyone to honor Sylvester’s memory by reflecting on his bright spirit and celebrating his intellectual brilliance. They also call for justice to be served for their beloved son, who was tragically murdered by fellow students.

Last year, on the two-year anniversary of Sylvester’s untimely demise, his father, Sylvester Oromoni, expressed his family’s unwavering determination to seek justice. Despite the prolonged wait for closure, he vowed to continue fighting for his son’s rights.

However, the family had previously threatened to withdraw from the ongoing inquest if it was not concluded by the end of 2022. They also highlighted the indictments issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Lagos State, against Dowen College and some of its staff, recommending their prosecution under Section 252 of the Criminal Law (C17) Vol. 3 Laws of Lagos State 2015.

Despite public outcry, protests, and the involvement of civil society groups and women’s organizations, the case has yet to yield positive results due to alleged delays by certain officials of the Lagos State Government.

Nevertheless, the family remains resolute in their pursuit of justice for their late son, determined to see the case through to a just and conclusive resolution, regardless of the time it may take.
