Lawyer Urges Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to Withdraw from the 2024 Governorship Race

In a plea to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Nigerian lawyer Dele Kuboye has called for him to abandon his governorship aspirations in the upcoming November 16, 2024 election, Aso Naija Reports.

Following the passing of Rotimi Akeredolu, who succumbed to prostate cancer in Germany, Aiyedatiwa assumed the position of governor on December 27, 2023.

However, Kuboye, in an open letter addressed to Aiyedatiwa, firmly asserted that the governor should refrain from participating in the upcoming election for the sake of Ondo South senatorial district.

Kuboye argued that according to the law, an incumbent governor cannot be sworn in for a third term if they intend to serve two consecutive terms. He emphasized that the people of Ondo South eagerly desire a governor who can serve two terms, totaling eight years, starting from February 24, 2025.

“I attended church today (Sunday), but I couldn’t focus! I have been informed by a few individuals on several occasions that you intend to run for governor in the forthcoming gubernatorial race in Ondo State,” Kuboye wrote.

“Sir Aiyedatiwa, I have thoroughly examined the relevant laws and precedents in Nigeria, especially those established by our Supreme Court, and I have arrived at the inescapable conclusion that the law will not permit you to be sworn in as governor for the third time, whether consecutively or otherwise!

“Please take note that the people of Ondo South Senatorial District, our shared district, fervently desire a two-term tenure of eight years for whomever will represent the district as governor starting from February 24, 2025!

“Sir, you can only serve four years in office, along with the remainder of your former boss’s term, which concludes on February 24, 2025! That is the current state of the law, sir!”

“In light of the aforementioned circumstances, Your Excellency, I implore you to prioritize the interests of our shared district over personal ambitions, withdraw from the race, and consider your role in advancing positive legacies during the remaining months of your tenure as the governor of Ondo State! Sincerely yours, with humility and honesty,” he added.
