Hugues de Phily, the prosecutor, informed AFP that Habsaoui, who has held the position of Avallon’s mayor since 2021 and is also a regional councillor, was one of several individuals targeted in police raids conducted over several weeks in connection with a drug trafficking investigation in the eastern town.
The prosecutor stated that searches were conducted at the mayor’s residence, the town hall, and the pharmacy where Habsaoui was employed.
However, the amount of drugs discovered at her residence was not specified. Nevertheless, a source involved in the investigation revealed that 70kg of cannabis had been seized.
In addition to Habsaoui and her two brothers, five other individuals were swiftly detained.
The prosecutor further revealed that unrelated aspects of the investigation had led to the seizure of 983 grams of cocaine, €7,000 ($7,700) in cash, and approximately 20 gold ingots.
This operation was part of a nationwide campaign aimed at curbing the illicit drug trade in French cities.
