Haub, a 58-year-old German-American retail tycoon, vanished in April 2018 while preparing for a ski mountaineering race in Zermatt, Switzerland.
According to DailyMail, Haub was last seen taking a lift up the mountain alone, which was unusual for someone known for being safety-conscious and well-prepared.
He never returned to his hotel, prompting a six-day search involving helicopters and alpine rescuers. However, his body was never found.
Haub, the former managing director and part owner of the German retail giant Tengelmann Group, was officially declared deceased by a Cologne court three years later.
He left behind a wife, two children, and a company employing approximately 75,000 individuals.
In 2021, Haub’s younger brother, Christian, testified in court that there was no sign indicating that the billionaire, whose net worth was estimated at £5.2 billion, was still alive.
However, a recent investigation led by German broadcaster RTL suggests that Haub has been identified in Moscow and is allegedly living with a much younger mistress named Veronika Ermilova.
The probe claims that Haub made 13 phone calls to Ermilova in the three days preceding his disappearance in 2018, including one call lasting over an hour.
These calls have raised suspicions that Haub may have been planning to stage his death with the help of Moscow and Ermilova.
The journalist involved in the investigation stated, “His disappearance came at a time when Tengelmann was experiencing difficulties and expanding into Russia with the Obi DIY chain, for example. I am confident that it was not a skiing accident but a planned escape.”
