In response to recent events, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have strongly condemned Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel.
The Iranian government accused Israel of conducting an airstrike on its consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month, resulting in the deaths of seven officers from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, including two high-ranking generals. While Israel has maintained its customary practice of not publicly claiming responsibility for extraterritorial operations, it is widely believed to be behind the attack.
The Israeli military reported successfully intercepting 99% of the incoming projectiles launched by Iran.
Following a meeting on Sunday to address these developments, the G7 leaders reasserted their commitment to Israel’s security. The G7, comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union as a non-enumerated member, issued a statement published on the White House website.
The statement declares, “We, the Leaders of the G7, unequivocally condemn Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack against Israel. Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel, but with the assistance of its partners, Israel successfully repelled the attack. We express our full solidarity and support to Israel and its people, reaffirming our commitment to their security.”
Nevertheless, the G7 leaders accused Iran of instigating a dangerous escalation in the region through its actions. They expressed concern that Iran’s behavior could lead to an uncontrolled escalation with severe consequences. The G7 leaders emphasized the need to prevent further destabilization and committed to working towards stabilizing the situation.
“In this vein, we demand that Iran and its proxies halt their attacks, and we stand prepared to take additional measures both now and in response to any further destabilizing actions.
Furthermore, we will enhance our cooperation to resolve the crisis in Gaza, which includes ongoing efforts to achieve an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, and provide increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need.”
