Rescue Dog Dies While Searching For Turkey Earthquake Survivors
Proteo was sent to Turkey as part of a huge international mission to save lives in the wake of the devastating earthquake that has so far claimed more than 35,000 lives.
The Mexican Ministry of Defence in a statement on Sunday, February 12 said, “Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you fulfilled the Mexican Army’s mission.”
It continued: “The members of the Mexican Army and Air Force deeply regret the loss of our great companion, the dog ‘Proteo’, you fulfilled your mission as a member of the Mexican delegation in the search and rescue of our brothers in Turkey. We are proud of you.”
It is not yet clear how Proteo died, but there are reports that he had carried out crucial work searching for survivors in disaster areas.
Proteo was one of ten dogs sent from Mexico to Turkey to help with the rescue of earthquake survivors.
