Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele Granted Bail After 151 Days In DSS And EFCC Custody

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory after spending 151 days in the custody of the government’s security agencies, Aso Naija Reports.

The court allowed Emefiele to go home and prepare for his arraignment on November 15, despite opposition from the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi granted the bail, citing the fact that Emefiele had exceeded the lawful period of detention in government custody. The judge also based his decision on the completion of the government’s investigation into the allegations against Emefiele, as well as the preparation of charges against him as of August this year.

In his ruling, Justice Adeniyi emphasized the importance of justice and fair play, particularly in accordance with Section 35 of Nigeria’s Constitution. He specifically stated that there must be an end to prolonged detention without trial by the federal government.
