Prophet Christopher Phiri Appears in Court Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of His 16-year-old Daughter
Last week, the prophet was apprehended in the district and charged with defilement. Disturbing videos and pictures purportedly related to the sexual abuse emerged on social media platforms.
On Friday, December 8, 2023, Phiri appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is being heard by senior resident magistrate Muhammad Maxwell Chande, who welcomed four witnesses presented by the prosecution. These witnesses included the child, her mother, a medical officer, and a police officer.
Brenda Nkhwale, the lawyer representing the Centre for Human Rights Education Advice Assistance (CHREAA), informed the court that the prosecutors planned to review the charges against Phiri.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned until December 19, when the court is expected to rule on Phiri’s bail application in addition to further proceedings.
Earlier reports indicated that the girl had disclosed the sexual abuse and mentioned her father’s threat to stop paying her school fees should she dare to reveal her ordeal to anyone.
Law enforcement authorities also confirmed the discovery of explicit photographs and videos involving the suspect and the victim on Phiri’s mobile phone.
Amina Tepani Daudi, the spokesperson for the Mangochi Police, stated that the victim had been issued a referral letter to Koche Health Centre, where medical examinations revealed evidence of sexual intercourse.
