70-Year-Old Ugandan Woman Makes History as Africa’s Oldest Mother, Welcoming Twins

In a remarkable development, a 70-year-old Ugandan named Safina Namukwaya has achieved the extraordinary feat of giving birth to twins after undergoing IVF treatment at a hospital in Uganda, Aso Naija Reports.

The momentous event took place on Wednesday, November 29, at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

Namukwaya, who delivered a baby boy and a baby girl via caesarean section, has now become the oldest woman in Africa to give birth, according to a statement released by the hospital on their Facebook page. The hospital expressed their pride in this significant accomplishment, stating, “We’ve achieved the extraordinary – delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother at the age of 70.”

In an interview with Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper, Namukwaya revealed that her pregnancy was fraught with difficulties, particularly because her partner abandoned her upon learning that she was expecting twins. She shared her experience, saying, “Men don’t appreciate being informed about the prospect of having more than one child. Since I was admitted to the hospital, my partner never appeared.”

Namukwaya, who had already given birth to a baby girl in 2020, explained that her desire to have children stemmed from the mockery she endured due to her childlessness. She recounted, “I took care of other people’s children and witnessed them growing up and eventually leaving me alone. I often wondered who would care for me in my old age.”

This incredible story showcases the resilience and determination of Safina Namukwaya, who defied societal expectations and overcame numerous challenges to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother once again, this time with the arrival of her twins.
